A Winter Yin Sequence to Call on the Light Within.

The Winter Solstice marks an auspicious shift in daylight, when we begin to emerge from the darkness back into the light. On the shortest, darkest day of the year, we are urged to call on the divine light from within. The long dark days of winter can lend themselves to physical stagnation, fatigue, and hibernation. In this yin yoga sequence, we honor the pause before we are called to expand once again.

Yin Yoga is a style of yoga practice that activates the connective tissues of the body in order to open restrictions physically and energetically. Using passive longer held postures the tissues of the body become more flexible and the energetic channels open

Demystifying the Psoas
The psoas muscles are the deepest muscles in our body. They are the link between our spine, diaphragm and legs and act as messengers between our inner selves and the outer world. They are involved in almost every movement we make - walking, running and sitting and provide important pathways for neural messages.

Whilst they are extraordinarily sensitive and responsive, we often find it difficult to consciously feel them, or even know where they are within our bodies. When we’re tired, emotional or have just been overdoing it a bit, they may become unbalanced and tense, potentially causing a wide range of symptoms including lower back pain, stress, postural imbalances and contributing to exhaustion and poor digestion.

Join this workshop to understand more about these most emotional of muscles, and:

· Improve your understanding of the structure and role of the psoas in the body

· Discover the connection between the psoas and the breath

· Learn why you don't need to stretch or actively strengthen your psoas

· Find out how to soothe and release your psoas safely

· Let go of long held tensions which may help relieve lower back pain and improve your psychological well being.

With nearly 40 years of experience, Catherine is well known for her imaginative and practical approach to yoga, and developed the Intelligent Yoga Teacher Training course with Peter Blackaby and Gary Carter.

Originally a professional dancer, Catherine discovered yoga as a teenager and studied various styles of yoga including Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga and various forms of Hatha yoga, before eventually gravitating to the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli.

Catherine’s daily yoga practice and teaching focuses on deepening physical awareness and alignment to reveal and release the natural freedom of the body, particularly the spine. She holds a Masters degree in ballet studies, and is a qualified Thai massage practitioner, and it is this interest in the body which informs and inspires her teaching.

Touch orientates us both inside and out, to receive good touch from the outside helps us to locate and express ourselves within.

This workshop will explore what makes good touch, the purpose of adjustments and how our whole self can be used to make them. We’ll also explore how to work from an embodied and relational perspective so that we can take into account how both teacher and student are touched by an adjustment and how our own state of embodiment is crucial to making useful adjustments. Time will also be given to taking a ‘trauma sensitive’ approach.

Kate Ellis has been working with touch for over twenty years. Originally Kate trained and practiced in Thai Yoga Massage and has been teaching yoga teachers to work with touch since 2001. She also practices as a Body Psychotherapist and brings her experience in this field to her trainings.

Thai Massage combines flowing sequences and focused acupressure techniques to create a unique healing therapy.

Sustained acupressure with palms, thumbs, elbows and feet is used to help remove blockages and free the tension inside knotted muscles.

Join senior yoga teacher Kate Ellis for a day devoted to the art of teaching. This weekend is designed specifically to help teachers and trainees develop their teaching skills and gain confidence in their ability to manage common issues and prevent injury whilst teaching. During our time together, we’ll cover:

Body reading and anatomy
Touch and adjustments
Common issues and how to support them
Preventing injury


There will be plenty of time to explore personal practice and for questions you may have about any aspect of teaching, including questions about postures, the art of teaching, adjusting, and how to support students who present with a range of common injuries and issues.

Suitable for all teachers and teacher trainees and newly qualified teachers who have questions and would like to refine their teaching skills.

About the Teacher
Kate is a senior teacher at triyoga and longstanding faculty member of their Teacher Training programme and has been teaching for over 15yrs. Her experience of receiving one-to-one yoga for over ten years and her 20 year practice in Thai Yoga massage had a profound effect on her understanding of structure and energy and revealed the importance of having a constant guide in the unfolding process of yoga. More recently her practice has gravitated towards exploring the mental and emotional body and she has trained as an Embodied Relational Therapist (a form of body psychotherapy). She now practices a synthesis of approaches in her private practice in Brighton and London.

Join Ness for this fun exploration of the challenging asana Hanumanasana, or 'the splits’ as we know it. This pose is named after Hanuman, the monkey deity, due to his great leap from India to Sri Lanka.

Maybe as a child you would have access to this posture, or perhaps, like me, you were knowhere near! I will show you how I deepened my practice and finally found my way into the pose.

The splits brings us immense opening in the hips, hip flexors, and hamstrings and also works on our quads, which not only gets us into Hanumanasana, but also improves back bending possibilities. 

It's one of those poses that give us a real sense of achievement, and reignites your playful child-like mind. To get there, you have breathe deep and let go, which brings with it its own lessons, and amazing release.

Im sure you have noticed the discernible shift from the warm days of summer to the cooler days of Autumn as we approach the Fall Equinox on Wednesday, September 23rd. This will be one of only 2 days in the year where night and day will be of equal length signifying that the balance between light and darkness is shifting.

There is a natural tendency during this time of transition to reflect upon what part of our own lives might be out of balance and how we can cultivate more balance mentally, emotionally and physically. A Yin Yoga practice is a wonderful way to regain some centering and embrace the changing seasons. In Chinese Medicine Theory Autumn is a time for letting go. To surrender. To release. To exhale.

This Yin practice begins with poses stimulating the Stomach/SpleenMeridian (related to the Earth element) which connects seasonally to the ‘Indian Summer’ and then transitions to poses stimulating the Lung Meridian (related to the Metal element) which connects us to Autumn. Honouring transitions helps bring us into alignment with nature. It assists in letting go of habitual negative thought patterns and opens us to new potential.

The practise will end with a wonderful healing Yoga Nidra.

Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep as it is commonly known, is an immensely powerful meditation technique, and one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. While the practitioner rests comfortably in savasana (corpse pose), this systematic meditation takes you through the pancha maya kosha (five layers of self), leaving you with a sense of wholeness. No longer do you have to dread spending hours sitting on the floor waiting for liberation. Here are five benefits of developing a yoga nidra practice.

This arm balance workshop will help you to understand how to apply techniques in order to get lift-off with confidence. Learn how to use your breath, let go of struggle and be open to all possibilities. You will learn how to connect to your core, explore the foundations and mechanics to make these empowering poses part of your regular practice; moving beyond your limitations with balance and strength. You will also break down the many intricacies of arm balances like crow, side crow and firefly – boosting your confidence, and connecting to your playful spirit. These postures will challenge you to be humble, embrace your fears; consequently there will be plenty of opportunity for self-reflection, expansion and evolution. You will be met exactly where you are and given the tools you need to progress at your level.

Spaces limited to 12 students only to ensure enough space around you and individual attention.

About the Teacher
Ness practiced Iyengar yoga for several years which is where she got her love for alignment. Yoga became an integral part of her life and she spent over 8 years exploring yoga with Gurus in India, Yoga’s homeland. During this time, Ness gained her Yoga Alliance teaching qualification and became more deeply immersed to the Ashtanga system which has become her passion. Ness has also practiced with B.N.S Iyengar, who is the oldest living Guru of Ashtanga Yoga. Ness loves her classes to be both challenging and fun, encouraging her students to move beyond their mental and physical limitations.

Yin Yoga & Nidra for self love and acceptance

Not everyone makes a resolution each January, but chances are you have at least once in your life made a New Year's Resolution. Think back over past resolutions and shine a light on them. What were they all about? If you are like most people, your resolutions were to change something about yourself: either there was something that you were doing that you wanted to no longer do, or there was something that you were not doing that you vowed to start doing.

 "I resolve to accept my body just as it is right now!"
 "I resolve to allow my anger/fear/depression to manifest without judgement."
 "I resolve to let ... (fill in the blank) ... just be"
     
These are "yang" resolutions relating to activities: resolving to do something or refraining from doing something, or in other words to change yourself or your life in some way. These can be wonderful intentions and there are times, not necessarily only on January 1st, when we do need to tap into our yang energies and change the course of our lives, but to be balanced, we also need to look at the yin aspects of such intentions.

Balance requires consciously honouring both the yin and yang energies of life. Yang is about change, movement, passion, climbing great heights, and accomplishing great deeds. Yin is about acceptance, allowing, stillness, enjoying the present moment and doing small everyday tasks as if they were great deeds.

This Yin and restorative workshop we will be mindful with a heart and lung meridian sequence to open ourselves up to accept, allow and nourish our trueself.

N.B: The venue has been very kindly donated to us to use for free to maximise the amount raised, we are very grateful and thank the team from the council for allowing this.

Please join us to complete this challenge of 108 sun salutations, which will be led by Lisa, Eva and Amelia, 3 local yoga teachers to Brackley whom will encourage and guide you through gently and safely. Suggested donation of £10 would be wonderful, or if you are not wanting to take part, please just donate to help raise as much as we can, for this great local cause.

this group will help you to achieve closure, and help you begin to
become who you want to be.

WHY 108 SUN SALUTATIONS?
The number's significance is open to interpretation. But 108 has
long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga.
Traditionally, malas, or garlands of prayer beads, come as a string of
108 beads (plus one for the "guru bead," around which the other 108
beads turn like the planets around the sun). A mala is used for counting
as you repeat a mantra—much like the Catholic rosary.

Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Such phenomena have given rise to many examples of ritual significance.

According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marma points, or sacred places of the body.
