If we are lucky enough to wake up the morning we are breathing, it is something that we all do naturally and probably don’t really think about on a day to day basis, that is until you go to yoga.
In yoga we have a number of different types of breathing exercises and the one I normally teach with my Yinyasa yoga is the Ujjayi Breath or “Victorious Breath”, Ujjayi literally means to conquer.
It helps to calm the mind and warm the body. We are looking to fill our lungs whilst slightly contracting our throat, breathing through our nose.
Thinking about rhythmic breathing is one of the most important parts of any yoga practice, if you control your breath this in turn calms your mind bringing you into the present moment. If you are consciously breathing throughout your practice it can bring positive changes to your mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing. Which in turn releases emotions and invigorates your practice.
